retention
A second area of focus for our Chief Nursing Officers, as well as front line nursing leadership, has been the retention of nursing staff. In 2008 we implemented in selected hospitals and in collaboration with our corporate Human Resources department, a focused review of why some hospitals had low retention. Using a formalized review process developed internally, we improved our nursing employee retention across 50 acute care hospitals by 6 percent in 2009 compared to 2008. During the process our Chief Nursing Officers and hospital-based Directors of Human Resources identified many effective practices related to improving manager accountability for staff retention. They also identified opportunities to improve the work environment based on this review. We plan to extend the focused review process throughout our organization in 2010.
